Non-Invasive Laparoscopic Spaying
Laparoscopic Spaying
At Dunckel Veterinary Hospital we recommend that our patients undergo ovariohysterectomy (spaying) around 6 months of age. Did you know that spaying is the most common elective procedure performed in small animal practices? We’re proud to offer an alternative spaying procedure called Laparoscopic Spaying.
How is Laparoscopic Spaying Different from Traditional Spaying?
Laparoscopic spaying (Ovariectomy) involves just two small incisions in the abdomen, typically between 1/8 inch and ½ inch, depending on your pet’s size. A tiny camera (laparoscope) is used to magnify and provide excellent visualization of the ovaries. This enhanced view allows the doctor to work carefully without the need for the stretching and pulling that can sometimes occur with traditional spaying, resulting in less pain for your pet. The ovaries are then removed, while leaving the uterus intact, as large studies show there is no significant advantage to removing a healthy uterus in dogs.
After the procedure, the two tiny incisions are sutured with absorbable sutures placed beneath the skin.
At Dunckel Veterinary Hospital, we perform many traditional spays for cats and dogs routinely, but for medium to large dogs, we recommend laparoscopic spaying as the preferred method due to its many benefits over traditional spaying.
By using some of the same less-invasive techniques commonly used in human medicine (such as endoscopy), we are able to provide your pet with the same level of care you would expect for yourself. If laparoscopy is recommended for us, why not for our pets?
